I recently headed to Oxford, Ohio (near Dayton) for a photo shoot of a lighting design project at Miami University. An architectural lighting shoot is always a challenge. To those who haven’t had the opportunity to participate, it typically happens after hours (so we don’t end up with a lot of daylight filling the space). This means, the Owner is gracious enough to hand us the keys to the building and allow us to poke around in there after normal hours (just us and the cleaning crew). We met the day prior to the shoot to walk the space and come up with a gameplan. We also had to override the astronomical time clock on the lighting control system.

Checking the specific time of day for sunset, next we coordinated the “magic hour”. It happens for only about 45 minutes right before and during sunset. We get a great navy blue sky with no fill light coming in the windows striking a perfect balance with the indoor and outdoor environment. This project just so happened to be full of windows where we could take advantage of the daylight harvesting. It meant we had to pick the most significant spaces to catch that perfect light.

The photographer showed up with two sets of cameras to set up and allow us to move quickly between the two rooms with the most windows. We shot eight different spaces in total and the shoot lasted almost 5 hours. We left the building around midnight. You’d think that was a pretty long time for 8 photographs, but our photographer, Scott Pease (www.peasephotography.com) was very detailed and intent in getting us the best shots possible. As the human eye is so much more sophisticated than a camera lens, we are able to easily discern details on lighting fixtures, whereas the camera often turns them into blobs of light. Scott brought his laptop and checked every exposure before the final bracketing shots to make sure we would get the details and contrast we needed.

Along with getting sneak peeks of the final images, I spent the rest of the evening with Scott’s assistant straightening tables, and lampshades, pushing chairs in, and moving trash cans out of the shot. After all pictures are taken, we restore the space and then the same scenario happens in the next space. It’s a lot of “hurry up and wait”, but the final images look fantastic.

Thanks again Scott!

Hi everyone! I can’t believe that this is my last day as Tec Inc.’s summer intern… the summer sure went fast didn’t it? I have to admit that this is a bitter sweet goodbye because I am very excited to go back to school to see my friends and start my senior studio classes but I will definitely miss being a part of the Tec Inc. family.

I can’t even begin to describe how wonderful this opportunity to intern for Tec has been. I came into this internship really not knowing what to expect from working with a lighting designer and several engineers, but I did know that it would be a unique experience compared to the typical internships offered to interior design students. Now that I have completed my internship, I see the value in the opportunities that I have had and the value in the experiences that I know I won’t forget.

As I look back to the first time I heard about this internship opportunity, I just remember me being so excited and knowing that I had to go for it! I would have never expected that after meeting with Terry and Adam at The University of Akron that I would be getting a call a week later from Ardra, informing me that I had won myself a second interview. After coming up to the Cleveland office to meet with Ardra and Mike I knew instantly that I wanted this internship more than anything. Lucky me… a few weeks later I got the exciting news that I was going to be your intern!

Like I have said before, I have had several amazing opportunities and experiences these past couple of months that I know I will carry with me into my professional career. Being able to go on several site visits, meet with architects and lighting reps, work on REAL projects, go to professional meetings, and of course being surrounded by such creative and accomplished engineers and designers every day has made my internship one that I’m sure everyone will be jealous of once word gets out to my classmates.

I do want to say a few thank you’s… to Terry and Adam for coming up with the idea to invite an interior design student to come and intern and for being very welcoming and helpful with everything, to Ardra for being so patient with me and being more than willing to help me with anything I had a question about, I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work under such an knowledgeable designer, to Mike for being so friendly and cheery all the time, giving me so much good advice about being a professional, and taking me along with him to several meetings that I enjoyed so much, to Steve B., Kelley, Tim P., Brandon and Tricia for allowing me to work with you on projects and being so helpful with everything, and of course to the rest of the Tec Inc. family, for being so welcoming and friendly to me… all of you made this experience such an enjoyable one!!! Thank you so much!

I will try and keep you updated through out the year on how school is going and let you know when our Senior Showcase will be at the end of the year if any of you would be interested in coming. It will showcase some amazing work that myself and my classmates have worked so hard on for the past four years.

Thanks again for everything!
-Natalie

Editors Note: Natalie was a great intern. Even though her studies are outside the disciplines we directly work in, we felt there was much she could learn from us that would help in her future career, and things we could learn from her in regards to design and coordination. We tried to provide Natalie with as many experiences as possible in areas that she might encounter later - project meetings, visiting sales representatives, site visits and field work, and general building design and construction knowledge. Natalie exceeded our expectations and hopefully we exceeded hers. Good luck Natalie.

The last few weeks have been filled with photo shoots. I dropped in on, and ended up helping stage shots at the Cleveland Public Library Rice Branch. I can’t wait to see those shots. Rice Branch is a beautiful building designed by Bostwick Design Partnership. We provided the electrical engineering, lighting design, and mechanical system commissioning. This building just received it’s LEED Silver certification. We’ll be receiving the pictures soon.

Ardra and I completed a photo shoot at North Olmsted Auto Collection. We completed the engineering and lighting design of several showrooms at the complex. For the photo shoot we focused on the Mercedes and Porsche showrooms. Besides the stylish cars, the showrooms have nice architecture and the lighting makes the vehicles shine. The staff in the showrooms were very friendly and helpful during our time there.

Ardra spent a couple days at Miami University on a photo shoot of the
Farmer School of Business. Ardra completed the lighting design for this
building, which also received LEED Silver certification. She’ll write
about her photo shoot soon.

The Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) held its annual International Conference and Idea Marketplace in Minneapolis July 10-14. More than 1000 attendees from more than a dozen countries attended the conference entitled Integrated Leadership for a New Reality. Nearly all of the sessions within the conference sought to identify “the new normal” following the devastating financial disaster of the last year. Institutions, design professionals, and vendors alike came together to learn, network, commiserate, and seek to make sense of world events that are impacting campuses small and large. I was fortunate to be one of the attendees.

Beginning with the Opening Plenary Speaker, Jerome Ringo, the first African-American to lead a major conservation group (The National Wildlife Federation) and continuing with Plenary Speaker Mark Milliron, the deputy director for post-secondary improvement for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a study in how various parties can collaborate to improve educational opportunities for students was a recurring theme. Understanding how dramatically facilities can impact student performance, balancing expenditures with revenue is a growing challenge. Concurrent sessions all shared a “green” theme, but also challenged attendees to find new and creative ways to collaborate with stakeholder – both on and off campus to find innovative new ways to stretch budget dollars and increase opportunities for students and staff.

Ever-expanding technology provides both challenges and solutions for colleges and universities. Many faculty members reportedly are hesitant to embrace new methods of connecting with students, yet incoming students want to learn rather than to be taught. Technology allows them seemingly endless opportunities for learning, regardless of location or time of day. Faculty are being challenged to find new ways to embrace technology, but them facilities staff must find ways (with a limited budget) to support these technology needs through infrastructure. The conclusion reached in many sessions was that institutions who figure out this challenge will thrive while those who continue to resist will fade away or become irrelevant.

Last week I traveled to Boston for the SMPS (Society for Marketing Professional Services) Build Business national conference. The tagline was “Reinvent Retool Rebound” and the conference was energizing. I attended several educational sessions that were very interesting. My personal favorite was Harnessing Social Media to Enhance Competitive Advantage. Using social media tools in the AEC industry has been a challenge for most of us. This session focused on firms in our industry effectively using social media to connect with clients.

The Keynote presentations were excellent. Erik Wahl spoke about sharpening your creative skills to rethink your vision and purpose. While he spoke he created three paintings - Bono, Michael Jordan, Albert Einstein. It was a very inspiring presentation - I plan to get my paint supplies out this week. The other keynote speaker was Chris Brogan. Chris spoke on the use of social media as a marketing platform. His presentation was fun and entertaining, but was difficult to translate to a professional services environment.

It’s always nice to catch up with friends from other parts of the country. This conference was attended by people from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii and also included some attendees from our neighbors to the north in Canada.

Probably the highlight for me was my good friend and co-worker, Mike Totsch receiving the Chapter President of the Year Award. Congratulations Mike! You’ve done a phenomenal job in the Columbus Chapter. I’d also like to thank the Columbus Chapter for “adopting” me at the conference. There were only three of us from the Northeast Ohio Chapter, and Columbus had more than a dozen people. They were gracious to include us in there plans.

If you were not able to attend the conference, but would like to ask some questions and learn about some things the attendees took away, please check out the Build Business TweetChat on July 27th. Information can be found here: http://www.buildbusiness.org/tweetchat_ad.pdf

I am just finishing up my third week as Tec Inc.’s lighting design intern and I have already learned so much in such little time. I knew coming into this internship that I was going to be absorbing an abundant amount of information but I never would have guessed that in just three weeks I would have already had some site visits and meetings with lighting representatives under my belt, and on top of that, already helping out with lighting calculations and layouts for some real, actual projects!

On my third day down in Columbus, I had the opportunity to go with Mike to the Edge Group, a landscaping design firm, to meet them, have lunch, and listen to Mike give a talk about business relations and marketing. It was very exciting for me to finally start meeting professionals in different types of design professions. I also learned some helpful hints from Mike’s talk that I’m sure will stick with me as I go into my professional career.

About a week ago, I went on a trip to Defiance College with Mike and Ardra to meet with the maintenance department to discuss possible changes to their interior and exterior lighting plans and fixtures. I didn’t say much during the meeting but I sure was listening. After hearing Ardra discuss lamp and fixture types with the department, I sure did learn a lot. I feel so lucky to be interning under such a knowledgeable lighting designer!

So as you can all see, I am keeping busy and my brain is GROWING!!!! I can’t wait to see what Tec has in store for me in the upcoming weeks… I’ll keep you posted
